150th orbit of Alexander von Humboldt

June 7th-11th, 2010
Havana/Cuba

Cuban Humboldtians are intended to celebrate the 150th orbit of Alexander von Humboldt. The celebration will be at the “Casa de Humboldt” (Humboldt’s House) in Old Havana. There are invited German professors and Humboldtians in Latin America to give lectures in the framework of “Serie de conferencias Humboldt con motivo del bicentenario en America Latina”.

We would like to plan the jubilee with two simultaneously events:

    • 150th orbit of Alexander von Humboldt (June 7th)
One section of the conference will dedicate to the memory of Alexander von Humboldt and his contribution to the science in particular to his activity in Latin America. In the opening ceremony on the Symposium we are inviting a German professor from Max-Planck-Institute for the History of Science and the Historian of Havana to talk about A. von Humboldt and his trajectory in Latin America, his influence in Centro America and in the Cuban society. A second part will be devoted to the memory of Alexander von Humboldt with general talk on Sciences.

    • Symposium on low dimensional systems (June 7th-11th)
The symposium is intended to be an international meeting of physicists in honour of A. von Humboldt. In this context it is expected to encourage the exchange among researchers and professors of different countries, in particular from the Ibero American region and obviously from Germany. The focus is intended to cover recent research in the field of nanosciences, nanotechnology and applications. On the other hand, the debate on current challenges of Physics: teaching, collaboration and application will be promoted.

Topics include:
  • Fabrication and Basic properties of Nanomaterials and Nanostructure
  • General Nanoscience
  • Nanotechnology in Energy
  • Energy States in Nanostructures
  • Optical Properties in Nanostructures
  • Non-Linear Optical Properties of Quantum Confined Systems
  • Nonlinear Optics of Quantum Confined Systems

The program will consist of invited talks and poster presentations. A certain number of submitted contributions will be also invited for talks.

    • Workshop on Complex Systems (June 8th-11th)
We would also like to announce a Workshop on Complex Systems. It will be coordinated by the Complex Systems Group of the University of Havana. The program will consist of tutorial lectures related to several topics within the wide field of complex systems. There will be a Poster presentation section into the schedule of the event.
